Ludlow Low-down!
Wednesday, we see a competitive 7 race card from Shropshire, with Maiden Hurdles to Class 3 Handicap Hurdles. Here is a small post to point where my selections will be and if they can be of any help!
12.50 Maiden Hurdle - Some lovely staying types from top to bottom and some of these in time will be making their way over fences. The short priced favourite Tiqris will prove hard to beat and being a local owned horse to me, many people will be following. He ran rather green at Ascot behind two nice types that day, but I think at the price, he is worth taking on. I'd have been interested in the David Pipe trained Off The Wall if he would have had a breathing op after a lacklustre 30l lost to Virginia Ash at Kempton. Monitor the betting for the 6 year old. Whatsupjack is a lovely looking horse and possibly will be better in time. BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL and KING HELLISIO are the two I'd be looking at. The former running well over the same trip and ground and the latter, who is quite well thought of by Neil Mullholland, he has shown likeable form in Point To Points and tackled a bumper first time under rules, where he travelled well for a long way out. Stanley Clarkes daughter is involved in the mighty King, so he could be taking the prize!
1.20 Handicap Chase - Roll The Dice beat two of his rivals fair and square 3 weeks ago in testing conditions and still un-exposed, he could take this race as well. The 7lbs penalty he has received and the drying conditions put a few question marks against his winning chances and at odds of 9/2 and 11/2 currentley trading at the moment for LAST SHOT and O'CALLAGHAN STRAND, I would rather be having an interest in those two in the re-match today. The Venetia Williams yard is on fire and the Handtheprizeover form before last time is strong, hopefully the former could run to that level. Jonjo O'niells charge will like the drying ground and his form in the summer is quite strong on the going.
1.55 Class 3 Handicap Hurdle - A race that has many potential improvers in and could well be a useful form guide for the Coral Cup or Fred Winter at the festival for one or two of these. Tidal Way is a juvenile who is running in a handicap after just 4 runs and can run well. Charlie Longsdon has done well with the 4 year old so far and it will be interesting to see how he can fair against some of his elders. Ulys Du Charmils run last time behind Robbie doesn't warrent a 5/1 quote for this race at present and the two Id be siding with are RED RIVERMAN and BRICK RED. Red Riverman has been consistent throughout his career and ran well in really testing ground at Haydock last time out. He may not be as well handicapped by a few of these but can run well at bigger odds. As for Brick Red, he has found the last 3 races all a bit too much hussle and bussle and a return to this tight track, a bold front running performance is expected.
2.30 Mares Novices Chase - This 10 runner mares chase has one or two are making up the numbers, Gouranga and Miss Kalia. Queen of Mantua was a horse who's owner I met at Towcester when I used to work in the industry and he always thought alot about this one. I'd only back over hurdles at Towcester as she tends to run a promising race then gets into all sorts of trouble. Kaituna to me hasn't showed that she loves the chasing game. Unseating behind the useful Alasi 3 runs back, she had a nice lay off to beat Venetian Lad, with some sloppy jumping and last time she did too. Combustible Lady has a 415 lay-off to overcome and I'd like to see how she would fair after today. A Little Swifter looks like she will be behind TARA ROSE today. She has to give weight away to the Twiston Davies 8 year old and the 2m 4f is sure to suit more than A Little Swifters 2m win around Leicester. Valmari will be interesting after falling the last twice in hot company, but I would prefer to see better jumping from the Tom Symonds mare.
3.05 Juvenile Maiden Hurdle - A race I dont like at all and not much form to warrant any top respect. The top horse Amoralist lost by 11l to Swynmor at Newbury back in December which is reasonable, his ability over hurdles is still to be seen as he didn't show enough for a confident selection today. The two I will be taking a small Interest in are KING OF DUDES and KING OF WIND. King Of Dudes is a horse who left his rivals for dead last time on the flat when kicking on from the front and Alan King hopefully will have him ready for today. As wih King of Wing's, travelled very well behind a Tim Vaughan juvenile at Ffos Las only to have the heavy ground to prevent him making a challenge. He should be one for the future but showed enough he maybe able to grab some prize money. THIS RACE....as stated is a tough old cookie!
3.35 Hands and Heels Handicap Chase - For those who are new to racing or were unsure what 'Hands and Heels' races are, they are where the jockeys cant use a whip and have to galvanize there mounts to make a challenge with their riding style and tactics. This 3m race is the longest on the card today, so it will be interesting to see how the jockeys ride the race. Kilvergan Boy has to shadow top weight today, not winning since February off a mark of 91 (16/1) and was beaten when unseating last time. There are too many negatives for me on the Yes No Wait Sorries owned horse. Kirkhammerton has become so frustrating its untrue and isn't getting any younger. One More Dinar took the race last year and nearly went on to win another race after at Wincanton. Pulled up the last twice and doesn't go into this race with form anyone can be confident about. It will be interesting to see if any money comes in for him. A small saver might be placed on Billy Blade at the course, but TORNANT wasn't disgraced at Ffos Las last time, he hasn't won under rules but even in the bad ground last time, he held his jumping up when tiring and he will need to jump well today.
4.05 NH Flat Race - The bumper rounds off a 7 race card which looks reasonable and in the last there are 4/5 which should feature well. Chancealot has an eye-catching jockey booking in Noel Fehily where he could be a nice sort. A check in the parade ring today will determine whether he is value or not. Gwili Spar of Peter Bowen has to be watched with the Welshmans bumper form quite respectable. Oscar Hoof is down to be favourite and doesn't have any experience so far, so it will be interesting to see how good he can be. It leaves us with LITTLE POP and CASTLE BEACH. Rumoured to be both around 5/1, the former was highly thought of when being entered up at Cheltenham first time and although outclassed, a likeable front running performance was given at the track last time to make you feel he can run well from the front again. He does have to give weight away however, which is some task. Over a stone in which to Castle Beach that will benefit from the better ground today and although he will need further in time, he could run well for Miss Rebecca Curtis.
Ill be at the course from 12.30 so why dont you drop me a tweet at @blue_bajan - Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks and have a good day :)
